| New B & B Makes Guests Feel 'At Home' By John Liang
A new bed & breakfast, Hotel La Amistad Inn, joins the list of B&B's in the area around the new National Arts and Culture Center in downtown San José. The center's opening spearheads changes to the landscape around Morazán Park, with plans in the works to put all telephone and power lines underground and to shunt noisy buses to the Uruca road northwest of San José. The neighborhood will offer people a more relaxed, less noisy area. Wolfgang Hilbich decided to buy the B&B two years ago to take advantage of the area's changing atmosphere. The original had only six rooms, so Hilbich invested $500,000 to buy the property and add another 16. The affable German developed the idea of acquiring a bed and breakfast during two years of travel following the divorce. A businessman for 18 years in Costa Del Sol, Spain, he sold his business interests there and traveled around Central and South America. Staying at B&B's with varying levels of quality. "During my travels, I always liked the intimacy of B&B's, and as I stayed in them, began to notice that some places lacked certain things, like reading lamps or other necessities," he said. "It was then that I began to think about starting my own B&B, a place where folks could feel comfortable and at home."
Hilbich, who speaks German, Spanish, English and Portuguese, feels that his customers should never feel alone, as one tends to feel in the bigger hotel chains. The "at home" feeling is enhanced by the camaraderie he shares with his six staff, who in turn, he says, share it with the customers. La Amistad Inn is in the neighborhood of Barrio Otoya, on Avenida 11 and Calle 15, near Morazán Park. Yellow columns gird the entrance and the reception area has a covered patio. Red ceramic tile lines the floors and the ceilings are made of wood. Breakfast is served in the patio German-country style, with a different hot dish everyday, fresh fruits, and unlimited coffee and bread. Rooms vary from standard singles at $25 a night to deluxe suites with kitchenettes and sitting areas at $60 a night. Every room has one or two queen-size beds with orthopedic mattresses, private bathrooms with hot water and 40-channel cable TV. The Inn offers safety deposit boxes, rent-a-car service and one-day laundry service. Courtesy of THE TICO TIMES; May 6, 1994 |
