León Nicaragua (Centroamérica)
 

When the spanish conquerors came to this part of the world, the region that today is Central América was called" Veragua". There were no borders to separate the land.

Panama was in the begining the head quarter from where groups of men were spread all over the "Veragua" region to conquer the rest of the indian tribes who use to habit close to rivers or lakes.

This is León, one of the oldest colonial city in Central América, founded by the spanish conqueror " Don Francisco Hernández de Córdoba" in 1523, who had also founded the largest colonial city of Granada, besides Big Nicaraguan Lake.

A city tour in León will introduce you to the history of volcanoes in Nicaragua. The original city of León was founded beside the Momotombo volcano , a perfect cone shape volcano that exploded and destroyed the city of León in 1610.

The city moved to the actual place. Here you can admire the biggest cathedral in Central América.

The chucrh in the photo is the "Catedral the León " here is the tomb of the famous nicaraguan poet "Rubén Darío"

This city is rich in colonial architecture and the city tour allow you to close appreciate old colonial buildings like :

  • La Merced and Xalteva churches
  • Old Spanish ammunition fortress
  • San Francisco Convent (built in 1524)
  • Casa de los leones (Aportal carved on stones showing two lions head)
