Location

Costa Rica is 51,000 kilometers square. It is bordered on the North by Nicaragua, on the South by Panama, on the West side by the Pacific Ocean and on the East by the Caribbean Sea. It is located ten degrees north of the equator in the isthmus of Central America.

Due to it's location, Costa Rica is rich in Flora and Fauna. The reason is that we are the newest firm land in America. At the end of the Cretaceus, when the dinosaurs disappeared, the south part of Nicaragua, all the Costa Rican territory and the North of Panamá were under the ocean. The volcanic activity by the time was the responsible of merging from the bottom of the ocean to form Costa Rica. The highest mountain of Costa Rica, such as Chirripó mount, all the Talamanca mountains, were the first peaks that got out of the water.

There are two tectonic plates still moving one into the other, these plates are The Coco and the Caribe. Every time these tectonic plates move, Costa Rica grows a little bit.

Before the volcanic activity, and the tectonic plates formed what is Costa Rica today, North America and South america were separated by water. Once both Americas became one big continent, these new lands served as bridge to animals from both Americas and they started crossing from one side to the other, creating a rich expansion of mammals in the new big American Continent.
