The people of Costa Rica

Costa Rica has more than four million inhabitants, and about half of them live in the Central Valley, around San Jose.

These people are predominately of European heritage, mostly Spanish but a fair number of them show varied amounts of indigenous characteristics.

Less than one percent of the population is full fledged Indian, and most of them live in reservations around Talamanca Mountains.

The Caribbean region has a large percentage of blacks, especially along the coast.

Many of these individuals are descendent of Jamaicans who were brought to work on the construction of the railroad. There is also a Chinese minority spread fairly around the country.

A typycal costarican is a happy person, usually friendly and willing to make conversation with anyone, specially to tourist from anywhere. Costarican is also a person proud of his country and culture.
